Blue trumpet vine, blue sky, blue bengal (Thunbergia grandiflora)

An quick growing vine that will blanket large trees. The Division of Forestry and Wildlife of the Hawai`i Department of Land and Natural Resources has designated this species as one of Hawai`i's Most Invasive Horticultural Plants.

  • A twining, climbing vine with distinct elongated heart shaped leaves (up to 7.5 in long)
  • White to purple tubular flowers (3 in long) growing in drooping clusters
  • Found on Hawai`i, Kaua`i, Maui, and O`ahu; native to Northern India
  • Spread by seeds, cuttings, stem fragments, or roots

Harm

  • Quickly climbs and blankets trees, fences, and powerlines
  • Blanketing vine will kill mature trees and impede regeneration of seedlings
  • Aggressively spreads and is difficult to control because of large tuberous roots
