lantana (Lantana camara)

An escaped ornamental that invades forest understory vegetation. The Division of Forestry and Wildlife of the Hawai`i Department of Land and Natural Resources has designated this species as one of Hawai`i's Most Invasive Horticultural Plants.

  • A woody branched shrub up to 10 ft tall
  • Prickly stems and serrated leaves (2.5 in long by 2 in wide) emit a strong unpleasant aroma
  • Flowers grow in round clusters (1 in wide) and range in color (white, yellow, pink, and orange); fruit is dark blue or black when mature
  • Widespread on all main Hawaiian islands; native to Central America
  • Seeds spread by birds

Harm

  • Forms dense impenetrable strands in forest understory and pastures
  • Birds do not like to nest in these thorny thickets
  • Lantana can make pets and livestock sick, its foliage and unripe berries are toxic
