Alibertia patinoi
(burijo, burojó)

This is a large shrub/small tree that is suited to humid tropical climates. In fact, it will only grow in areas of very high humidity. The bush thrives in heavy soils with consistent rainfall or along rivers. The fruit is harvested only when ripe, often after it has fallen from the tree, and then it is often shipped to cities in its native South America. The fruit contains high levels of protein, ascorbic acid, calcium, iron, and phosphorus. It is purported in Colombia that pulp from the fruit has aphrodisiac properties. Besides that it’s thought to provide a cure all tonic for all that ails. Extracts can be found for sale on the internet and in health food stores.
